Your assignment:
Currently there seem to be a reawaking of the “buy made in America” spirit. Proponents of the idea
seem convinced that it is a sure path to restoring American jobs and keeping our neighbors and
community employed, but is it?
Your assignment is to write a comprehensive research paper presenting a support (pro) or against
(cons) Americans buying only or mainly “made in America” products, and the impact of this decision on
American and global economy.
Points to consider in your write-up:
– What is the perceived advantage or disadvantage (if any) of the achieving this notion?
– Giving the present globalization is the notion of Americans buying mainly or only made in
America product an illusion or could it be achieved?
– What impact would the achievement of the above have on America’s economy?
– How would the rest of the world react to American made products?
– What effect will this have on consumer choice? Vis-à-vis availability of variety of products and
services, maximizing consumers’ welfare, etc.?
ECON 10100-001/Spring 2017/CGO Page 2 of 3
– What effect(s), if any, does consumer choice play in the quest for made in America products?
– Can cost of labor help or affect America’s ability to achieve this “dream” of made in America
products?
– Can top management compensation help or affect America’s ability to achieve this “dream” of
made in America products? What about personal or corporate taxes? How would they impact on
this?
– What policy advice would you suggest to improve or achieve the situation, or otherwise?
Guidelines:
– You are expected to show a clear and very lucid understanding of the concepts studied in this
class by using relevant terminologies and examples in your write-up and presentation.
– You are expected to demonstrate and use extra research from other sources other than your
textbook and class lecture. Your term paper must have at least a minimum of four in-text citations.
Three of the required in-text citations must NOT include your textbook; in other words show good
use of external research. You must also have a work-cited page different from main work.
– The use of data, graphs, tables, and figures from your research will be highly favored in grading.
– It would be to your advantage to prove your understanding of the concepts of economics by
applying such terms and concepts in your paper and presentation.
