Get Help Now!For your Homework Assignment, you will need a partner. It can be anyone over 10 years old, but an adult is preferred. Tell them that this is a homework assignment for you. You are allowed to tell them that you are going to have them do things, but that you CANNOT tell them what the goal is.
Operant Conditioning Training Through Shaping
Follow All Instructions Exactly as Written
Follow All Instructions Exactly as Written: In the exercise, you are going to use reinforcers and punishers to train your partner, using “shaping through successive approximations.” Ask your partner to leave the room. Take a set of keys and place them in a visible but not usual place. Do NOT hide them or block them from view! For example, you can put them on the corner of the coffee table, on the edge of a chair, or someplace like that. Your goal is to reward closer and closer behavior until they actually pick up the keys in their hand.
READ THE FULL INSTRUCTIONS AHEAD OF TIME (I and II), BEFORE STARTING THE TASK
Follow All Instructions Exactly as Written
I. The Task:
1.Have the person come back into the room. Explain that, for this exercise, you cannot tell them what to do or talk to them. Ask them to just start doing random things.
2.If they do anything in the direction of the keys (take a step, move a hand, or look that way, for example, say the word “Good!” Then be quiet. They will look at you, laugh, grunt, or ask you “What am I supposed to do!” Just shake your head that you can’t talk. Wait for them to begin moving again and say “Good!” every time they move towards the keys. Do NOT shout them at your person. Stay calm and say them in a reasonable tone of voice.
3.If they move away from the keys say “Nope!” and then be silent. Do NOT shout them at your person. Stay calm and say them in a reasonable tone of voice.
4.Keep this up, saying “Good!” or “Nope!” when appropriate, until they pick up the keys.
II. Things to know ahead of time:
1.The person will stop and stand still for a LONG time. Just wait.
2.The person will get frustrated and want to quit. Ask them to be patient and keep trying—it’s for your homework.
3.The person will complain—just be quiet.
4.Wait, wait, wait.
5.Make sure your timing is good for the “Goods!” and “Nopes!” You will make mistakes–it’s OK. Just keep going.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT NOT TO STARE AT THE KEYS, OR GESTURE TO THEM, OR MOVE YOUR BODY IN THAT DIRECTION. NO HINTS!!!

In Section 1, describe Operant Conditioning.
Then, in Section 2, explain how you used reinforcement and punishment to train your partner to pick up the keys. Discuss problems that occurred, errors that you made. Be sure to discuss how this is an example of shaping behaviors.
Format:
a.Your paper should be double spaced, with paragraphs that are indented. REMOVE EXTRA LINES FROM BETWEEN PARAGRAPHS.
b.It should have 1-inch margins all around. Use Times New Roman 12 pt font.
