Culture isn’t just about nationality, family, race, religion, or the language you speak. Two people can live in the same country, speak the same language, and have entirely different cultural experiences because of their socioeconomic status, which “is often used to refer to a person’s social class, educational level, income level, and occupational status” (Arnett & Jensen, 2018, p.10). SES is a construct. It is characterizing a family’s economic resources, social hierarchy, prestige, and power. SES affects culture and vice versa. In developing countries, “people in urban areas have higher incomes, receive more education and better medical care…people in rural areas tend to be more collectivistic because in rural areas close ties with others are often an economic necessity” (Arnett & Jensen, 2018, p.9). Family income and parents’ level of education can influence child development physically, emotionally, and cognitively. “In developing countries, about “20% of children do not complete primary school and only about half are enrolled in secondary school. College and other tertiary education is only for the wealthy elite” (Arnett & Jensen, 2018, p.9). Socioeconomic status is a measurable that helps us understand cultural patterns, cultural change and cultural variability.

In Chapter 2, the topic of inequity in maternal and infant care in the United States and globally did not surprise me. Although I had background knowledge on race and ethnicity being the basis of this issue, I did not know how badly it has affected our society today. According to the CDC, “Black, American Indian and Alaska Native women are two to three time more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women.” I believe that this is preventable however it seems that these issues have progressed over time. As someone who is interested in pursuing a career in the medical field, I believe that this information will be useful in imposing protocols to help address racial bias within health care systems. Additionally, certain ethnicities are prone to different illnesses and I believe that it is important for our health care workers to be educated on these topics in order to prevent issues like this from occuring.
